Cat6 vs Cat6A vs Fibre: Which Cabling Should Your Office Use?
Choosing the wrong cabling standard is an expensive mistake to fix later. Here is a clear comparison of Cat6, Cat6A and fibre for offices and campuses.
Cabling is the part of your network you touch least and regret most when it is wrong. Because it lives in walls and ceilings, replacing it is disruptive and costly — so it pays to choose the right standard up front.
Cat6
Cat6 reliably carries gigabit Ethernet and can do 10G over short distances (up to about 55 metres in good conditions). It is cost-effective and perfectly adequate for many small and mid-size offices where runs are short and 10G to the desk is not required.
Cat6A
Cat6A supports 10G across the full 100-metre channel with better shielding and noise immunity. For new builds, high-density Wi-Fi backhaul (modern access points increasingly want multi-gig uplinks), and any environment you want to future-proof, Cat6A is usually the right call.
Fibre optic
Fibre is the choice for backbones — building-to-building links, floor-to-floor risers and data-centre connectivity — where distance or bandwidth exceeds what copper can do. It is immune to electrical interference and supports very high speeds over long distances.
What about "Cat7"?
You will see Cat7 marketed, but it never became a mainstream TIA standard for structured cabling the way Cat6A did. For most Indian offices the practical decision is Cat6 vs Cat6A for horizontal cabling, with fibre for the backbone.
A simple rule
Use Cat6A for new offices you want to last a decade, Cat6 where budgets are tight and runs are short, and fibre for backbones and inter-building links. Whatever you choose, insist on certified, tested links with documentation.
